In March 2024, Enel Lybra Flexsys, a company within the Enel Group, awarded Impresa Manca, in a joint venture (JV) with Enemek, a Spanish company specializing in electrical and instrumentation works, the EPC contract for the construction of the BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) plant described below.
Main Project Features
Installed capacity of approximately 125 MW, consisting of 136 battery containers and 34 Power Conversion Units (PCUs), divided into three separate sections:
- first section: 40 battery containers (10 PCUs);
- second section: 72 battery containers (18 PCUs);
- third section: 24 battery containers (6 PCUs).
The individual units, interconnected through the plant’s internal 33 kV distribution network, form the complete BESS installation.
The different plant sections are connected via 33 kV medium-voltage cable ducts to the medium-voltage switchgear installed within the auxiliary building of the shared substation, which includes a dedicated 122/153 MVA, 33/220 kV MV/HV transformer serving the new BESS facility.
The 220 kV “Paringianu IC” substation, serving the Sulcis BESS energy storage plant, is connected — through a dedicated busbar feeder — to Terna’s “Sulcis” National Transmission Grid (RTN) substation via the existing 220 kV cable line No. 136, approximately 0.500 km in length, with a 2,000 mm² cable section and a current-carrying capacity of 1,058 A.
The BESS plant will be connected to the 220 kV transmission network through an underground high-voltage cable linked to one of the three existing 220 kV bays currently associated with the thermal generation units scheduled for future decommissioning (GR1). The existing 220 kV bay, owned by Terna, is located in Paringianu, Portovesme Industrial Area, Portoscuso (SU), Italy.
